Safe Haven Foundation (SHF) is a humanitarian foundation dedicated to providing shelter, aid and responsible adoptions of animals entrusted to Safe Haven's care, and to eliminating the needless deaths of dogs and cats in Colorado, and the education of the community about respect and kindness to all animals, and the need to control the number of animal's reproducing is central to the mission of the Foundation.
Safe Haven will support and promote a coalition that will be a collaboration of no-kill organizations, animal control agencies, traditional shelters, private practice veterinarians, animal rescue people and other community service nonprofit organizations.
The Problem, as stated by the Colorado Pet Overpopulation Fund.In six years, a female dog and her offspring can produce up to 67,000 other dogs. A female cat and her offspring can produce up to a startling 420,000 kittens in just seven years. By controlling the number of animals reproducing, we can reduce the number of pets that must be destroyed. Last year alone, over 30,000 pets were euthanized due to a shortage of adopting homes in Colorado. Many animals are not being spayed or neutered, leading to random breeding and pet overpopulation.
By working together we can reduce the deaths of dogs and cats in Colorado. We can accomplish this through:
- Developing and offering educational programs, educating animal owners about excess pet births and controlling pet births is essential to saving animal's lives
- Aggressive adoption programs, making the most of off-site locations and mobile adoption units
- Veterinary medical hospitals administering and subsidizing spay/neuter programs for dogs and cats of Medicaid recipients and low income families, this could significantly curb pet overpopulation
- Supporting collaborative efforts between local veterinarians, animal rescue and control agencies statewide, working together with the community organization such as local church groups and community organizations i.e. food banks, which are working with the low income families
- Offering a shuttle service that will go into low income areas and pick up pets to be spayed/neutered and deliver them to the local vet clinics
This is going to be the most comprehensive spay/neuter and adoption program ever seen in our state, as well as the largest animal sanctuary for the animals that cannot be adopted. In contrast to other shelters, animals in Safe Haven will not be euthanized, but rather will live out their days peacefully with us.
